Can You Freeze Sourdough: Here’s How We Keep It Fresh
So, you & the folks have switched to Sourdough – that artisan quality, healthy, and tasty loaf that offers much more in every department than commercially bought bread. The wide range of flavours of Sourdough makes them a local favourite here in Ireland. But what if you cannot finish that luscious loaf at once and want to store it for the next day’s staple? Should you freeze your sourdough? Or simply pack it and leave it on the kitchen countertop for the next day’s consumption?
The answer is yes – you can freeze sourdough, but it will only retain its original taste and texture if you do it right.
Freezing sourdough bread is a great way to enjoy it later before it goes stale. It’s a great option for smaller households who can enjoy their loaves fresh, just like every morning.
Here, at Novak’s Bakery, we love delivering artisan goodness to our patrons in Limerick – elevating their binge sessions with tasty & healthy bread. Let us help you understand how to freeze your sourdough bread right.
Is Freezing Sourdough Bread a Good Option?
Let us begin by saying that sourdough bread freezes extremely well. When done properly, you can enjoy your loaf as good as new while also ensuring minimal food waste.
The lactic acid in sourdough bread prevents it from going stale. It acts as a natural preservative that increases the shelf life of sourdough bread by trapping moisture and preventing dryness. While we encourage you to enjoy fresh sourdough – you can store your bread in a way that retains its tangy taste and airy texture.
Freezing the Bread
If we had to choose one method for storing sourdough bread, this would be it. Once you have opened the packaging and want to store it, slice the entire loaf. Make sure the bread has completely cooled down before freezing it.
Cut small pieces of baking paper, place them between the slices, and slide your whole loaf inside an airtight ziplock bag. Now that your loaf is sealed inside an airtight container, you can pop it inside the freezer and consume the slices as and when needed. After removing from the freezer, the sourdough only needs a few minutes to defrost – after which it is ready for consumption.
Reheating the Bread
When it’s time to use the loaf, remove it from the freezer and defrost it for 2-3 hours at room temperature. Once the loaf has been defrosted, place it inside the oven after preheating it at 150C. Cover the loaf with a large pot and bake it for ten minutes. Then, remove the pot and bake it uncovered for five more minutes – until the crust is nice & crisp.
Once baked, cover the loaf with silver foil and allow it to cool down to room temperature. Your sourdough is ready to be enjoyed all over again.
